CELLARS AND HISTORIC RESIDENCES

Day 1.
Arrive at Catania airport. Coach transfer to Hotel****S in Siracusa. The hotel is a refined former aristocratic dwelling in the heart of Ortigia, home of the most important residences since the 13th. century.

Guided tour of Ortigia, a small island site of ancient Greek temples, a labyrinth of narrow medieval streets and flamboyant Baroque Palaces set in a turquoise sea. Dinner in a selected local restaurant. Back to the hotel and overnight.

 

Day 2.

Breakfast in hotel. The morning begins with a visit to the picturesque local fish market, winding through the alleys of Ortigia, discovering the typical Sicilian products. . Afterwords, Madam Fiora will show you how to prepare 2 traditional Sicilian dishes that will be cooked and served as a very special lunch.

In the afternoon guided tour of the “Parco Archeologico della Neapolis” (from the Greek “new city”), which will include the Basilica of S. Nicolo dei Cordari, the Roman Amphitheatre, the Altar of Ierone, the Greek Theatre, the Paradise Quarry and the so-called “Ear of Dionysus”. Back to the hotel. Dinner and overnight.

 

Day 3.

Breakfast in hotel. Transfer to Planeta Buonivini winery in the Noto district. In this corner of Sicily, also known as the Val di Noto, one can be immersed in the cfystal clear sea of the Vendicari nature reserve, in golden baroque architecture, in the green hills covered with vineyards. The winery is placed completely underground, invisible and well integrated into the surrounding landscape which is cultivated with almond and carob trees. Wine tasting and luch wil be provided at the winery.

Afternoon visit of Noto, a World Heritage Site, known as “The Stone Garden”. Onward transfer to Modica, whose name may be Phoenician (“mutika” – tree) or Sikil (“murika” – barren or bare uncultivable land). Check-in at Hotel*****, an ex-ecclesiastical manor of Renna, which previously was an Arab farmhouse. Dinner and overnight in hotel.

 

Day 4.
Breakfast in hotel. Guided tour of Ragusa Ibla, city of ancient origins and a fine example of the Sicilian Baroque. Lunch of local specialities in a traditional restaurant. Afternoon return to Modica, and then on to Marzamemi, a small fishermen village. Dinner in a local fresh fish restaurant (fish caught locally). Back to the hotel and overnight.

 

Day 5.

Breakfast in hotel. Transfer to “Feudo dei Principi di Butera”, a prestigious vineyard. Tour of vines and cellars, which contains 104 Slovenian oak storage barrels, with a capacity of 3,000 to 6,000 litres. Tutored tasting with sommelier. Lunch of typical local dishes in the cellars. Transfer to Hotel*****in Agrigento. The hotel is an noble residence of the 18th century situated within the Archaeological Park of the “Valle dei Templi” standing only 200 metres from the Temple of Concordia. Dinner and overnight.

 

Day 6.

Breakfast in hotel. Visit the beautiful “Valle dei Templi”, one of the most representative sites of Greek civilization in the Mediterranean area. Visit to the Temple of Hercules, the Temple of Juno, the Temple of Castor and Pollux, the wonderful Temple of Concord and finally the beautiful Garden of Kolymbetra. In the afternoon visit of the “Scala dei Turchi” , characterized by a white –ochre chalky architecture excavated by the wind and waves. Back to the hotel. Dinner and overnight.

 

Day 7
Breakfast in hotel. Guided tour of “Tenuta Regaleali”, ancient wine house and current winery of the Tasca D’Almerita family. This green peaceful place stretches over several hundred hectares through the Sicilian interior between Palermo and Caltanissetta, to the Sclafani Bagni hills where the heat so typical of this Mediterranean region is less intense. Tour of vines and cellars. Wine-tasting and lunch. Afternoon on to Palermo and the Hotel***** a historic 19th.-century residence commissioned by the Florio family. Dinner and overnight

 

Day 8.
Breakfast in hotel. Guided tour of Palermo, taking in the Cathedral, the Norman Palace, the Palatina Chapel and the famous “Capo Market” where you can taste the typical street food. Lunch in local restaurant, sampling of the classics Palermitan cuisine. Afternoon free. Back to the hotel. Dinner and overnight.

 

Day 9.

Breakfast in hotel. Departure.
